These are themes that have been covered plenty in other mediums and by other artists (Lynch immediately comes to mind for me with "Twin Peaks" and "Blue Velvet") but they work so well in this episode too.Ībsolutely love the Johnny Mathis song (which he apparently refused to give rights to for this episode) and the ironic effect it has in the context of this episode.
It's such a well written and surprisingly intelligent episode that really, in my opinion, has a very strong thematic framework of the coming of modernity into small town America and the underbelly that exists within the apparently idealized Americana. I told myself that I wouldn't watch any X-Files starting from the second season finale during my three month uni semester because I wanted a clear mind before digging into where the show reportedly gets REALLY good and that bold and questionable decision has paid off wonderfully well. Just hearing about how controversial, terrifying and notorious the episode was made it something I hyped up for a good five months. Where do I begin with Home? It's probably fair to firstly say that I've NEVER in my life hyped up a single episode of television more (arguably not even the anticipation for Twin Peaks The Return's premiere could match it) than I have with Home. I just feel an episode of this caliber, despite being twenty years and older, deserves a post. Please bear with me for what could be a quite lengthy post.
